Liposuction

Liposuction, also known as suction-assisted lipectomy, is a technique that is used to remove undesired fat deposits from areas of the body. These areas include the facial region such as the cheeks, neck, and chin. Liposuction can also be performed on the upper and lower body. Upper body targets include the upper arms and above the breasts and the abdomen. The lower body areas targeted by liposuction can include the knees, ankles, calves, buttocks, thighs, and hips. The result of this procedure is a sculpting of any bulging areas into more attractive contours.

The liposuction procedure will remove fat cells in order to improve your body’s shape. After the procedure has been performed, any additional weight gain will go to the fat cells that have been left in your body which will allow you to gain weight more evenly instead of specifically in certain areas. This will occur because the fatty deposits that existed prior to the procedure in centralized areas can no longer swell out of proportion to rest of the body. Liposuction is a body contouring procedure, not a weight loss procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions about Liposuction:

How long does the liposuction procedure take?
Liposuction usually takes anywhere between one hour to four hours. However, the duration of the procedure varies due to the area of the body in question and the amount of fat being suctioned.

What is the difference between a Tummy Tuck & Liposuction?
Liposuction is a technique that is used to remove unwanted fat deposits from specific parts of the body. The result of liposuction is a sculpting of overly fatty areas into more attractive contours. This procedure improves your body’s natural shape by removing fat cells. However, liposuction is NOT a weight loss procedure, it is a body contouring procedure. In a tummy tuck procedure, Dr. Rajagopal separates the skin from the abdominal wall all the way up to the ribs and lifts a large skin flap to reveal the vertical muscles in the abdomen. These muscles are tightened by pulling them close together and stitching them into their new position which creates a firm abdominal wall and narrow waistline. The skin flap is then stretched down and the extra skin is removed.

How do I take care of my body after the procedure?
For three to six weeks following the procedure, a snug girdle or body stocking must be worn over area that has been suctioned in order to control swelling and bleeding, as well as to help your skin adjust to its new contours. Dr. Usha Rajagopal will instruct you on how to care for your body by wearing the stocking.

What should I expect after the procedure?
Do not be alarmed, you will even be heavier for a while. This is due to the extra fluids that you’ve been given during the procedure. Any areas that have been suctioned will be swollen and bruised, along with a possible burning sensation. Prescribed pain medication will be provided to you which will help to control pain, although you may still feel stiff and sore for a few days. After the procedure, you may temporarily lose feeling in the suctioned area; don’t worry – it will return.

How long will it be until I can return to normal activity?
After your procedure, Dr. Rajagopal will probably tell you to begin walking again as soon as possible to help prevent blood clots forming in your legs. However, you are highly recommended to avoid more strenuous activity for two to four weeks after the procedure. Any stitches will be removed five to ten days after surgery and you could be back at work in 2 – 3 days. However, it may take up to two weeks after your surgery, depending on the area and amount suctioned, as well as the physical condition of the patient before surgery. Swelling and discoloration can remain for six months or more, however most will be gone by two months after surgery.

How much does a liposuction cost?
Liposuction of the stomach will cost approximately $2,600- $8,500.

Am I a good candidate for liposuction?
You may be a good candidate for stomach liposuction if:

  • You are of a relatively normal weight but have pockets of excess fat in particular areas
  • You are physically healthy and psychologically stable
  • You are realistic in your expectations from liposuction
  • You have firm, elastic skin, which will result in a better final contour
